Eight checks to run before the ATF arrives. Below them, the pages dealers ask us for most.

§01 Inspection readiness

The inspection checklist

Run it before every inspection. It covers federal recordkeeping, and your state may add its own rules.

  1. 01

Your A&D book matches the shelf

Every gun on the shelf has an open acquisition. Every gun that left has a disposition. Count it against the book, never from memory.

  2. 02

Every 4473 is complete and filed

That includes denied, delayed and cancelled transactions. Check signatures, dates, the NICS transaction number and the response.

  3. 03

Corrections are made the right way

Correct an error on the record with a dated note. Never erase it or write over it.

  4. 04

    Multiple handgun sales are reported

Two or more handguns to one buyer within five consecutive business days need ATF Form 3310.4. Send it to ATF and your state or local police by the close of business on the day of the second sale.

  5. 05

    Thefts and losses are reported

Report a missing firearm to ATF and local police within 48 hours of discovery, on ATF Form 3310.11.

  6. 06

Your license is current and posted

Check the expiration date. Make sure the license on the wall matches the premises.

  7. 07

    Your backups are running

Confirm last night’s compliance backup finished, and that you can open it.

  8. 08

    Your inspection access is ready

Know where to find your ATF inspection link and your on-site read-only copy before anyone asks for them.
